Roger Jeanes, affectionately known as “Barber,” was born on September 12, 1942, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Donald and Caryl Jeanes. He grew up in the Dike and Maynard areas and graduated from West Central High School in Maynard in 1960. Following graduation, he attended barber school in Waterloo, completing his training in 1961 and beginning a career that would become a defining part of his life.
On July 29, 1962, Roger married Beverly Jeanes, beginning a loving marriage that spanned more than six decades. Together, they made their home in Westgate, Iowa, where they lived for 60 years before moving to Oelwein five years ago.
Roger devoted more than 60 years to his trade as a barber, serving customers in Westgate and Oelwein through both full-time and part-time work. More than a profession, barbering was a part of who he was and connected him to generations of people in the communities he called home. He also worked at Donaldson’s Inc. in Oelwein for 20 years.
A dedicated community member, Roger volunteered with the Westgate Fire Department for more than 30 years. His willingness to serve reflected his commitment to the people and community around him.
In his younger years, Roger enjoyed playing in a men's fast-pitch softball league. As the years went by, he developed a passion for vintage car restoration and loved attending local car shows in his own vintage 1950 Ford Coupe or his pickup truck. One of his greatest joys was attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events and supporting them in the activities they loved.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; his four children, Jodi Riverso, Cary Jeanes and his wife, Tracey, Neil Jeanes and his wife, Missy, and Lonny Jeanes and his wife, Jessica; seven grandchildren, Danielle Riverso, Carley Jeanes, Carsen Jeanes, Carter Jeanes, Anna Jeanes, Madison Jeanes, and Mollie Jeanes; and one great-grandchild, Andrew Williams; brother, Larry Jeanes and his wife, Theresa, sister-in-law, Sandy Jeanes, sister-in-law Karen Wittman, brother-in-law Mike Potratz, brother-in-law Bryan Potratz and his wife Robin, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Caryl Jeanes, father and mother-in-law Alvin and Agnes Potratz, brother, Alan Jeanes, sister-in-law Jeanette Brehm, and brother-in-law Clayton Wittman.
Roger will be remembered for his many years of dedication to his trade, his service to his community, his love of classic cars, and, most importantly, his devotion to his family. The relationships he built throughout his life and the memories he created with those he loved will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
His life was one of hard work, commitment, and family, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
