Norma Lavon Gilley was born July 22, 1929, the hottest day of that year, at the family farm northeast of Maynard, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd & Edith (Brause) Gilley. On the day she was born, her dad had to crank the old Chevy to come to town to get Dr. Hall to assist with the delivery. Norma grew up at rural Maynard and received her education at Maynard High School where she graduated in the class of 1946. Norma was united in marriage to Delbert Leroy Glew on March 9, 1947 at the First Presbyterian Church in Maynard. They lived for many years at rural Maynard and to this union they were blessed with four children, Bonnie, Peggy, Charles and Julie. Norma was employed at several grain elevators, J.C. Penney and several other places. After Delbert's death on June 15, 2010, Norma moved to Vinton and remained in the Vinton, Shellsburg and Cedar Rapids area until moving to Lisbon in September of 2020.
Norma was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein. She taught Sunday School and Bible School as well. She was also a 4-H leader when her children were young. Norma and Delbert enjoyed their 500 Card Club that they played in for 58 years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, stamp collecting and spending time with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her 3 Daughters: Bonnie Peacock (Paul Smalley) of Vinton,
Peggy Chensvold of Marion &
Julie (Bill) Kester of Walker;
her 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, all whom she dearly loved;
2 Sisters-In-Law: Charlotte Glew of Maynard &
Dorothy Glew of Ackley and many
Nieces & Nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son: Charles on June 24, 2002; sister: Marjorie Rouleau and her son-in-law: Pat Peacock.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of The Gardens and the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon for the excellent care that Norma received while in their care.
