Mardell J. "Maisie" Walker, 86, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa died on Monday evening, October 4, 2010 at the West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa. Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa; Officiating: Rev. Mardell Jean Warthan was born on July 24, 1924 at Fayette, Iowa the daughter of LaVern Frank and Bernice G. (Rathbun) Warthan. She graduated from Oelwein High School in in Oelwein, Iowa in 1942 and later graduated from the Oelwein Business College. Mardell married Lester Jay Walker on August 18, 1946 in Oelwein, Iowa. Lester died on February 16, 2000. Maisie was a homemaker and also had worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad in Oelwein. In Oelwein, Maisie was a member of the Junior Womens Club, TTT Service Club and sang in the Oelwein Ladies Musical Group. She and Lester moved to Independence, Iowa in 1968. Maisie worked for VanDenover Jewelry in Independence as sales clerk. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Oelwein and the First Baptist Church in Independence where she played the piano for 10 years. She also assisted with the Meals on Wheels in Independence. Maisie was a dedicated caregiver for Lester before his death in February of 2000.
