Janet J. Leverington, 87, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Friday morning, December 2, 2022, at MercyOne Oelwein Senior Care in Oelwein.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein with Rev. Daniel Hanson officiating.

Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein.

Janet Joyce Rabe was born January 4, 1935, in Luzerne, Iowa, the daughter of George Christian Frederick and Pearl Ethel (Possehl) Rabe. She graduated from Vinton High School in 1953. On September 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to Marvin Keith Burkey in Vinton. Marvin died in 1971. On July 5, 1974, she married Delbert Earnest Leverington at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa. Janet did bookkeeping and secretarial work. She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein, where she was active in church circles. Janet enjoyed collecting angels, camping, going to the river, traveling with family and friends, neighborhood card club and Wednesday wine night with Delbert.

Janet is survived by her son: Doug Burkey (Jeannette Hoth) of Oelwein; daughter: Beth Ann (Lyle) Behrend of Luana; daughter-in-law: Teri Burkey of Hawkeye; 2 stepchildren: Richard (Marlene) Leverington of Georgetown, Texas and Delbert (Claire) Leverington of Cedar Rapids; 8 grandchildren: Matthew (Kayla) Burkey, Kristin (Bryan) Pates, Stephanie Burkey, Gregory (Mackenzie Cowden) Lenth, Ashley (Jason) Burkey, Alexander (Hannah) Lenth, Aimee (Rev. Daniel Hanson) Lenth and Michael Burkey: 8 step grandchildren: Jared (Julie) Leverington, Justin (Kim) Leverington, Amanda Young, Brannen (Dena) Bourgeois, Shawn Bourgeois (Bridgett Birkle), Shelley Ergen, Brooke (Dave) Hartley and DJ (Lissa) Ergen; 10 great grandchildren: Landon, Brent, Avery, Connor, Breelyn, Oaklee, Mara, Nora, Atticus and Oliver; sister: Gwen (Denny) Hennings of Dysart; brother-in-law: Bill (Rita) Leverington of Arkansas; 2 sisters-in-law: Donna Chamberlain of Center Point and Wilma Walters of Chandler, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Marvin Burkey in 1971 and Delbert Leverington in 2005; son: Tim Burkey on April 15, 2018, daughters-in-law: Margy Burkey and Kathy Burkey; son-in-law: Rick Lenth; and granddaughter: Gina Prevenas.
