George R. Edwards, 99, of Oelwein, Iowa died Monday morning, August 12, 2013 at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein with Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating. Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa. A Memorial Fund has been established in his name. George Richard Edwards was born on March 7, 1914 at Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Frank Earl & Myrtle Frances (Powers) Edwards. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1933. George married Opal Damge and two daughters were born to this union. George & Opal later divorced. George married Bessie Bernice "Betty" McDowall at Rockford, Illinois and two sons were born to this union. He worked for the Iowa Motor Company for 31 years. In 1970 George moved to Des Moines where he owned and operated a service station for 4 years. George also worked at Knief Motor for 2 years and Speedy Manufacturing for 2 1/2 years in Oelwein. He was formerly a member of the First Christian Church and former Scoutmaster. George is survived by his 2 Daughters, Mardy (James) Schilleman of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas & Laureen Slater of Oelwein; 2 Sons, Mike (Joyce) Edwards of West Des Moines & Randy (Sue) Edwards of Indianola; 3 Step-Daughters, Shirley (Bill) Swanson of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Bonnie Murphy of Johnston & Joyce (Steve) Rovner of West Des Moines; 15 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren; 14 Great-Great Grandchildren; special Nephew, Lynn Alitz of Oelwein and many other Nephews and Nieces. Preceded in death by his parents, wife: Betty on October 14, 1985, son at birth: George Richard, 3 brothers: Gordon, Charles & Robert and 2 sisters: Edna & Donna.
