Alejandro Cruz, 71, of Oelwein, Iowa died Sunday evening, May 12, 2019 at MercyOne Hospital in Oelwein. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 16, 2019 the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. Military honors by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard of Oelwein. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday and for one hour before the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Inurnment: At Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. Online obituary at www.jamisonschmitzfuneralhome.com Alejandro Cruz, Jr. was born December 13, 1947 at Bayamon, Puerto Rico, the son of Alejandro Cruz, Sr. and Estebania Rivera. He graduated from High School in New York. Alejandro proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On November 7, 1997, he was united in marriage to Candida R. Pastrana at Orlando, Florida. Alejandro was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, shopping, drawing, fishing and going out to eat with his Honey. Alejandro is survived by his wife: Candida Pastrana-Cruz of Oelwein; 3 children: Catherine "Cat" (Matthew) Nolan of Oelwein, Charity Fuzessy of Des Moines and Xavier Rodriguez of Orlando, Florida; 4 grandchildren: Leandra Lea Casalini, Joshua Fuzessy, Christiana Palacio and Mason Nolan; and his "bodyguard", his pug: Thursday. He was preceded in death by his parents.
